Drinks have been poured and the sound of stomping hooves fills the air. A band of horses and their jockeys gallop down the field, as one competitor drives a ball toward the goal. If this scene sounds familiar, you’ve likely enjoyed an exciting match of polo. This fast-paced yet posh sport is played at the Sarasota Polo Club, located in Lakewood Ranch, at 1 p.m. every Sunday. Bring the family for a tailgate party before the game, and enjoy fun activities during halftime.

When
Polo matches take place every Sunday at the Sarasota Polo Club. The next match will take place Sunday, Dec. 27. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the game begins at 1 p.m. Future dates include Jan. 3, 10 and 17. Check the club’s website for more dates. Tickets cost $15 for general admission and can be purchased online. Children 12 and under are free.
What to Bring
If you are planning to tailgate before the game, be sure to bring chairs, blankets and a spread of snacks and drinks. Picnic tables and umbrellas are also stationed at each parking spot. Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed. Bring binoculars if want to get a closer look at the match, and be sure to wear your best casual country club attire.
What to Expect
Established in 1991, the Sarasota Polo Club has been charming spectators on its 130 acres of well-manicured land ever since. The property includes 45 private equestrian estates, boarding facilities and a player’s club and pavilion.
When you arrive, you will be directed to a parking spot along the field, where you can set up your tailgate. Matches begin at 1 p.m. and last one to two hours, divided by a halftime where children can enjoy activities on the field; various themed parties will take place throughout the year.
