The Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex, located at 5309 29th Street East, is moving forward with a planned $7 million renovation and expansion designed to significantly upgrade both the facility and the visitor experience. Plans include a third NHL-size ice rink, with the new sheet of ice currently targeted for August 2027.
The two-year improvement project is also expected to bring an NHL-level dry-land training center, upgraded gym geared toward hockey and figure skating, new lobby, upstairs restaurant, video replay room, ice treadmill, AI-assisted practice technology, new locker rooms and updated restrooms. Outside, the property is planned to receive new paint, landscaping, asphalt and signage.
Owner Matt Smith told Tampa Bay Beacons the goal is to make the nearly 30-year-old complex one of Florida’s premier training facilities. The project was expected to enter permitting in September, followed by bidding once approvals are secured.
For Ellenton and North Manatee County, it’s another substantial investment in an established local destination rather than an entirely new development.
